Remember when you were a kid how magical it was when the summer sun finally set at the end of the day and the fireflies pool party came out and you never wanted to come inside even though your older sister pool party told you your house was built on a graveyard and the zombies would come out at night? Well, here's a super quick craft to help your kids feel a little bit of that magic.
These fireflies are super easy to make. Just pop a flameless LED tealight into a plastic Easter egg. You don't even need glue! Poke holes through the egg with a thumbtack to insert the pipe cleaners. The eyes are drawn onto white sticky labels, and the wings are silver pool party duct tape. Quick, easy, and totally cute!
Aw, those are cute! I want to make one with my son, I MISS fireflies! Since we moved to Michigan we never get them! At the absolute height of summer we MAY see one or two, but nothing like when we lived in warmer states and the yard was *filled* with them.
Yes, we live in Minnesota, and it's still too early in the season (very chilly at night!) for the real thing. My daughters have been running around the backyard with these in the evenings and having a blast.
I just happened to have all the materials on hand so I made one and it wasn't as easy as poking a thumbtack through the egg! I had to do that then push a small nail through the holes made with a tack and wallow it out a bit and pull it out with a pliers. But I got the job done. It's super cute!
This is so cute. We were having a hard time finding a firefly craft for Bible School and this will be great. I will make one with my daughter also. We went out and cought fireflies last night now she will continue the fun inside the house also. Thanks for sharing this great idea.
Just wanted you to know that I am using this idea for VBS. We are reusing Bug Safari from 2002 and none of the crafts are available now. Anyway this is just the thing we needed for firefly night! Great idea. Kids will love. Thanks :)
LeahC_79: My kids live in an apartment building and we have no lawn. Because I have young ones, who need to be in bed, we all have to be home and inside for "firefly time", so they don't really get a chance to be outside the way I was when I was a kid. Trust me, I wish they could, but I'm glad for this little craft that I know they will love.
These are really GREAT! I work with disabled people and they can't run around the backyard at night. What a wonderful way to help them experience the thrill of a "normal" fun time. My summer camp for the disabled had a great time with this craft. Thanks for sharing.
These are adorable! We're going to try and make these at a craft event at my work in the fall - I've already collected tons of Easter eggs! I've run into a problem though - poking pool party holes in the eggs. Do thumbtacks and pipe cleaners come in a wide range of sizes? Our thumbtack pool party holes are waaay too tiny for the pipe cleaner to fit! We've also tried book-binding awls, they make a bigger hole, but with some of the eggs the plastic cracks after the second or third hole for the legs. If anyone has any tips they can share - we would love some help! My plan is to prep about a hundred or more eggs with holes, then the kids that come for the craft can put the pipe cleaner parts, eyes and wings on their firefly. Thanks for such an cute and creative pool party craft AT!
Lou Bear, I used the Crop a Dile eyelet and snap punch to punch the holes with no cracks or problems. Not worth getting for just a few, but maybe if you are doing as many as it sounds. Good luck with your event!
Too pool party much fun. How I miss catching fireflies on a hot summer's eve. I'm off to dig the supplies pool party out of my craft cabinet pool party now & toss them in my luggage for our trip to the PNW to visit the g-kids. They miss them too so this'll be a fun project. (shhh...I pool party actually caught a few in a jar last summer, I was missin' my babies so much. Dh thought I'd lost my mind at first but he soon joined in the fun. 'Course if you tell him I just shared that, I'll deny it;)
I so missed fireflies when I lived in California. I'm not sure where the breaking pool party point is -- but they're pool party not native everywhere! Also, firefly populations pool party are tanking -- possibly because half the US puts down grub-killer every single spring. And fireflies pool party do spend time underground pool party as grubs.
ding ding ding! We can only find them around here, in the deep south by the way, where my relatives live way out in the country on a hobby farm that doesn't use pesticides. Everywhere they used to be when I was a kid there's few to none. Because of all the pesticide use in neighborhoods and on working farms. :(
